Finder won't sync your iPhone? 7 fixes (and a better way)
Your iPhone is plugged in and Finder acts like it isn't there. Before you restart everything twice and give up, here are the fixes that actually work — in the order worth trying them.
First, know which failure you have
"Finder won't sync my iPhone" is really three different problems: the phone never appears in the sidebar at all, it appears but Finder won't talk to it ("Trust this computer" loops, permission errors), or the sync starts and dies partway. The fixes below are ordered so the early ones cover the most common causes of all three. Try them in order — most people are done by step 3.
- 1Swap the cable — seriously.
A huge share of "iPhone not showing up" cases are charge-only or half-dead cables. Cheap cables often carry power but not data. Use an Apple or MFi-certified cable, plug it directly into the Mac (not through a hub or monitor), and try a different port.
- 2Unlock the phone, then look for the Trust prompt.
iOS only shows "Trust This Computer?" while the phone is unlocked. Unlock it, unplug, replug, and keep the phone's screen on. If you once tapped "Don't Trust", reset it: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Location & Privacy, then reconnect.
- 3Tell Finder to show devices at all.
Finder → Settings → Sidebar → tick "CDs, DVDs and iOS Devices". On a fresh Mac this is sometimes off, and the phone connects fine while Finder simply never displays it.
- 4Restart both devices.
Deeply unsatisfying, frequently effective. The Mac processes that manage device connections can wedge; a restart clears them. Restart the iPhone too — its side of the connection can be stuck just as easily.
- 5Update macOS and iOS.
After a new iOS version ships, an out-of-date Mac can fail to recognize the phone at all. If the phone runs newer iOS than the Mac has support files for, update macOS first, then reconnect.
- 6For Wi-Fi sync: same network, isolation off.
Wireless syncing needs the phone paired over USB once, "Show this iPhone when on Wi-Fi" enabled, and both devices on the same network — not a guest network, not a VPN, and not a router with client isolation turned on. When in doubt, plug in.
- 7Check what the Mac actually sees.
Apple menu → About This Mac → More Info → System Report → USB. If the iPhone is listed there but not in Finder, macOS sees the hardware and the problem is software — recheck steps 2–5. If it isn't listed at all, it's the cable, the port, or the phone.
Syncs that die at 90%: that's usually one enormous video tripping a timeout, not a connection problem. Free up a few gigabytes on the phone, plug into the Mac directly, and let it run with the phone unlocked the first time.
Why this keeps happening
Finder's device sync is the part of iTunes that survived the 2019 breakup, and it hasn't received much love since. Discovery, trust state and transfer all hide behind one sidebar icon with no diagnostics: when something's wrong, Finder's answer is silence. You're left guessing whether the problem is the cable, the pairing, the network or the Mac — which is why the same seven fixes get rediscovered by millions of people a year.
